WPIU activities in Val Trompia (BS), Lombardy
Last Friday, 15 September, ERSAF staff from Breno and Milan travelled to the upper Val Trompia, in the province of Brescia, for an advisory mission to prevent wolf predation in mountain pastures as part of the Life WolfAlps EU project.
The WPIU consulting activity was dedicated to several farms, including the manager of an alpine hut that, in recent weeks, has suffered the predation of around twenty animals by the predator, which has only recently returned to the Brescian valleys.
Also present at the meeting were two agents of the Anti-poison Dog Unit of the Brescia Provincial Police and a veterinarian, an ERSAF expert consultant, who intervened specifically to support the farmers by assessing the preparedness of the guard dogs in the alpine pastures as well as their management on the farm.
During the field visit, the technicians illustrated the operation and positioning techniques of electrified fences to protect livestock from future attacks, explaining to the herders how best to use the equipment, how to place batteries and earthing devices, and reiterated the importance of periodic voltage checks.
