From high electric fences to Fladry – for protection of grazing animals in Slovenia
As part of the Life WolfAlps EU project, Slovenia Forest Service has so far provided protection for 14 farmers to protect their grazing animals. Six of them received high electric nettings for protection (160 cm), five a 145 cm high fence with an additional electric tape on top, two farmers a multi-wire electric fence and one stationary mesh fence. As part of testing additional protective measures for grazing animals, the so called »fladry system« was also installed in the field.

Through the project, we also distribute intervention kits that serve as an immediate protection after a damage case or to prevent further damage. Farmers can use the intervention kit available until their own adequate protection is provided. Upon delivery of the intervention kit, the farmer is advised and assisted in setting up. If the farmer applies for an intervention kit due to a damage event, we also set up automatic cameras next to the intervention kit. After setting up an intervention kit or signing a contract, the farmer is regularly monitored by phone calls and field visits, where we check the correct placement and operation of the protection lent or financed, and in case of installation of automatic cameras, we check the events on the pasture.
