The Innovative Young Farmer 2021 is also participating in the LIFE WOLFALPS EU project
This autumn we are working on establishing cooperation with different farmers. Recently, we started a collaboration with Gregor Slavec from Knežak. The Slavec eco-farm is engaged in the breeding of autochthonous and traditional Slovenian animal breeds, including cattle, sheep, goats and other animals.
The farm is located in an area where wolves and bears are regularly present, and in the last years also jackals are increasing their numbers in the area. Therefore, the safety of grazing animals is becoming an important issue. The farm has therefore decided to revive the protection with livestock guarding dogs.
As part of the project, Gregor will breed guarding dogs of the Maremma-abruzzese sheepdog breed. He has experiences with the breed, as he has already used it for the purpose of protecting the herd. For this purpose, some months ago a female named Sila arrived on the farm. The name was given to her by the children, as the kind dog loves to be in the company of children, but her true character shows up when she barks in a deep voice. Sila will soon be joined by a male, with whom they will form a breeding pair for future generations of livestock guarding dogs.
Gregor received an important award in October – he became the Innovative Young Farmer 2021. The award praises the hard work of diligent hands on the Slavec farm. At the beginning of December, another excellent news arrived at the Slavec farm – the farm received the prestigious European award for the Best project on improving rural areas, for which we sincerely congratulate Gregor and his family!
